Following Jesus by Serving
Jesus turned the world’s definition of greatness upside down. “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). In God’s Kingdom, greatness is not measured by how many people serve you but by how many you serve.
Jesus the Servant
The night before His crucifixion, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet — a task reserved for the lowest servant. Then He said, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:15). The King of Kings took the towel and basin. How can we do any less?
Why Serve?
- Serving reflects God’s heart, for God is love and love serves
- Serving builds the church — every believer has gifts for the common good (1 Corinthians 12)
- Serving grows our faith and keeps us humble
- Serving is our calling — we are “created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10)
Ways to Serve
- In your church: volunteer in children’s ministry, hospitality, or music
- In your community: food banks, shelters, or mentoring programs
- In your workplace: work with excellence and integrity, helping others succeed
- In your family: simple acts of kindness and practical support
